Our EDI Mission Statement

The Universities for Nottingham F2F CDT in Resilient Chemistry’s EDI mission is to:

  • Increase access of students from a diverse background
  • Retain talent from underrepresented groups
  • Provide tailored support, training to accommodate diverse needs including those with protected characteristics
  • Create a safe environment that is open to all and supports diversity
  • Engage all supervisors with our EDI agenda through training programmes

Our EDI in Action

Recruitment:

  • We will remove barriers to access by using a competency-based admissions framework, through review of language used in advertisements and interview questions.
  • CDT engagement programmes that targets underrepresented applicants from a diverse background (e.g different socio-economic status (SES) including applicants with protected characteristics and those with caring responsibilities.
  • All applications will be anonymous until the point of interview. All interviewed candidates will receive feedback.

Student Experience:

  • All our training, events and activities will have EDI embedded in the form of inclusive scheduling (regular, predictive timetabling) accessible to all (in person, online, recording available to all)
  • Flexible working arrangements will be made available for those with caring responsibilities, disabilities, health and wellbeing-related reasons or due to cultural expectations
  • Support structures will be put in place to support students if their circumstances change (e.g. transition to part-time PhD, parental leave, VIS, etc).
  • Additional support is available for disabled students through EPSRC’s Disabled Student Allowance.

Training Programme:

  • Bespoke EDI training will be delivered to both PGRs and supervisors, to include elements of inclusive leadership, dignity at work, developing positive and inclusive relationships, safe spaces and supervising fairly.  Training will allow participants to reflect on their own EDI practices and to increase awareness of the PGR journey.
  • Provide tailored mentoring delivered by suitably matched mentors (academic or industry) to support the individual needs of the student.

EDI Support:

We encourage all our students to make use of the EDI networks across both Universities, links to additional EDI supports can be found below:
